When staying at Thurnham Hall during October, you’re in for a bewitching treat. Lancaster and the surrounding towns hold chilling history and Halloween-themed events that will sink you into the local haunts — literally!
Read this guide to find the most petrifying haunted sites in Lancaster to put on your October vacation to-do list.
Begin your ghostly excursion with a short drive to Lancaster Castle, which famously served as the site for the Pendle Witch Trials in 1612. Ten women were accused of witchcraft and murder, and each woman was found guilty after trials. The ten prisoners were then publicly executed at the Lancaster Moors nearby. Today, the historic castle still operates as a working court, and you can book an hour-long tour during specified hours throughout the week.
Then, if you haven’t had enough of the chilling Pendle Witch Trial history, drive down to Pendle Hill and the small town of Newchurch — which sits just at the base of the hill. Supposedly the spirits of the executed witches still roam this town, including one whose body was buried near Newchurch. The hill itself is also reportedly haunted and many locals refuse to climb it after dark due to rumors of eerie spiritual encounters.
Blackpool Tower Dungeon
Located just 45-minutes from Diamond’s Thurnham Hall, the Blackpool Tower Dungeon is the self-declared “Home of Halloween” in the Lancaster area. You can book tickets for Halloween festivities, including themed live shows, a 60-minute tour and escape rooms. This year, they’ve even added a “Curse of the Pendle Witches” experience to tie in the local history.
Blackpool Ghost Walks
Stephen Mercer, the author of the book Haunted Blackpool, hosts Blackpool Ghost Walks to take you through some of the most famous haunted areas in the town. You can find more information about this year’s tours on the Blackpool Ghost Walks site.
Relax at Thurnham Hall
In between your spooky explorations, the activities team at Thurnham Hall has you covered for a day Halloween activities and fun! For the week leading up to Halloween, and the holiday itself, join family-friendly events on-site throughout each day, including an arts & crafts hour in the morning and a pumpkin carving competition in the afternoon followed by a Halloween movie screening. Each fun-filled day winds down with live music in the Great Hall.
Whether you’re looking for some thrilling ghost stories or a day of relaxing family fun, Lancaster and Thurnham Hall provide both options during your October vacation.
