Searching for a Mardi Gras celebration you won’t forget?
Look no further than St. Louis, Missouri, home of the self-proclaimed, second-largest Mardi Gras party in the U.S. New Orleans may get all hype during Fat Tuesday, but St. Louis can hold its own.
We’ve outlined the top things you should know to get ready for a trip to the Gateway City for Mardi Gras.
Why St. Louis?
Starting with humble beginnings, the St. Louis Mardi Gras festivities were sparked in 1979 by a small group of friends celebrating the holiday by passing out strands of beads in the streets. The following year, the group turned their small party into a larger event, and the rest is history. Today, the Soulard celebrations draw in more than half a million visitors each year, and the events they have in store keep the Mardi Gras festivities going all month long. In 2020, the parties kicked off with the second annual Bacchanalian Ball on February 1, 2020, and continue until the Mardi Gras parade on Saturday, February 22.
Where should I stay for Mardi Gras in St. Louis?
As a Primary members-only destination, the Red Lion Hotel St. Louis City Center places Diamond members into the heart of St. Louis, just moments away from the city’s festivities. Walk just half a mile from your hotel room to the Busch Stadium, which serves as the starting point for the Bud Light Grand Parade.
Where can I see the St. Louis Mardi Gras Parade?
Starting at Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Mardi Gras Parade travels two miles across the heart of the city, ending at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery on South Broadway and Sidney Street. From your accommodations at Red Lion Hotel St. Louis City Center, you can traverse the entire parade length and find the perfect perch to watch the procession. Be sure to get out on the streets early to find the right spot before the parade begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22.
On the sidelines, you will have a chance to collect prizes and fun memorabilia being tossed into the crowd by parade performers. New in 2020, performers will be tossing out plastic eggs that each hold a voucher for prizes like food and drink discounts, Party Tent tickets, signed St. Louis Blues merchandise and tickets to the Blues Alumni Experience. The Blues float will also be tossing signed foam hockey pucks out for fans to catch throughout the parade.
Where should I park for the Mardi Gras Parade?
The parade requires several streets to shut down during the preparation and duration of the parade. If you plan to drive, get there with plenty of time to spare so you can find a parking spot in the designated areas. Alternatively, you can use ridesharing services or take advantage of the St. Louis Taxi app, which helps you book a taxi right from your smartphone.
So, whether you’re looking for a fun weekend getaway or just a new way to celebrate the holiday, consider St. Louis in your 2020 Mardi Gras plans.
