How do you take virtual concerts to the next level? Sweatpants.
Indie pop singer-songwriter Maddie Poppe raised the bar for comfortable concerts during the latest #DiamondLIVE @ Home event on Thursday, May 21, 2020. The “American Idol” winner went live on the Diamond Resorts Facebook page wearing sweatpants and T-shirt, while performing in her family’s basement.
“Also, I’m wearing sweatpants. Shh, don’t tell anyone,” she said between songs.
Diamond Resorts members and fans were loving the star’s look, which also included newly-dyed dark hair. Hundreds of fans commented on her new hair color, which she assured was only temporary.
“People are probably like, ‘Who is the brown-haired girl? We were told Maddie Poppe was going to be here.’ It’s me. Believe it or not, it’s me in brown hair,” she said.
After winning season 16 of ABC’s “American Idol” in 2018, Maddie Poppe signed an exclusive recording contract with Hollywood Records and released her first single, “Going Going Gone.”
In 2019, Poppe released her studio album “Whirlwind,” with singles “Made You Miss” and “Not Losing You” making a splash on the Billboard U.S. Adult Pop chart. After performing in her own tour, Poppe shared the stage with fellow indie pop artist Ingrid Michaelson on her 2019 Dramatic Tour – finishing with a sold-out show in London, England.
During her virtual show on Thursday, Poppe performed a few of her older songs, including “The Reason” and “Don’t Ever Let Your Children Grow Up,” which she wrote in her family’s basement with her dad.
She also performed a cover of Ingrid Michaelson’s “You And I,” and shared a story about the first time she met Michaelson – in an airport wearing “comfy” clothes.
“[Ingrid] looks my way and I can feel her looking at me and I’m pretending, ‘don’t make a scene, Maddie,’ and I can feel her looking and then she goes, ‘Are you Maddie?’ And I freaked out,” Poppe shared during the livestream.
Poppe also answered a few questions from fans and said she can’t wait to get back to seeing everyone “in the flesh.”
