The 2020 Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions featured too many once-in-a-lifetime experiences – for the players and fans – to count. From a nail-biting playoff finish to celebrities showing off their dance moves on the 18th tee, the event delivered far beyond a typical golf tournament. But there was one unique experience that a group of Diamond Resorts members won’t soon forget: sitting in on a live taping of #MomentsWithDiamond.
Set up on the driving range, Diamond Resorts CEO Mike Flaskey sat down with Ben Higgins, from season 20 of ABC’s “The Bachelor,” and Michael Waltrip, a two-time Daytona 500 winner and Diamond celebrity, to talk all things tournament.
Higgins was new to the celebrity roster for 2020 and spoke about the excitement of experiencing such a large event that allows players to directly interact with fans all week. “For us, this is an experience also, and we get to have it everybody that’s watching – and I don’t want that to ever be forgotten,” said Higgins.
Waltrip, on the other hand, joked about his fourth-from-the-bottom finish in the 2019 tournament and shared his goal to beat at least five people in 2020.
(Spoiler alert – he didn’t.)
It’s all fun and games, though, between Waltrip and his favorite rival Larry the Cable Guy, who has finished just above Waltrip the past two years.
Flaskey noted that Diamond Resorts has an exciting year ahead, including the recent announcement that the Diamond portfolio has extended into New York City. And, as always, plans are already in motion for the 2021 Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions next January.
Flaskey also discusses the importance of the charity efforts undertaken each year during the tournament. Along with silent auctions and donations made during this year’s tournament, a new @TheVacationDR clothing line launched in January 2020. And the best part: all net proceeds go directly to the Diamond Resorts International Foundation to support charitable causes year-round.
Beginning as a charity tournament, Diamond’s golf tournament has transformed into Orlando’s biggest golf party. Flaskey gave props to his Diamond team for creating such an incredible event. “We didn’t walk in and say we want to be the title sponsor of this — we created this,” he said.
