I once had someone say to me, “Oh, my flight was delayed, and crowded; my luggage went to another city; and it rained the entire first day. My vacation was completely ruined!”
And I thought: no one got hurt. The plane eventually took off, the luggage was found, and the rain stopped—so weren’t those just glitches in a perfectly good vacation?
Resilience is a good word and an even better state to be in. Our lives are a lot more complicated (and interesting!) than they were before we had cars, planes, computers, electricity and so on; the increasing complexity of modern life also means a corresponding potential in the number of things that can go wrong. So to survive it all and still enjoy such essential lifestyle components as our vacations, we need to remember that most problems and issues are small and solvable. We can’t let a cloudy day make us forget the sunny ones.
Sometimes travel is indeed maddening, but the reward is getting to our destination and enjoying it for all its worth. Forget about the delays. And that one thing you forgot to pack. What’s ahead is a wonderful and restorative vacation, if you just roll with the twists and turns that can occur along the way. So enjoy your friends and family and hopefully you can enjoy all of the good times and remember to Stay Vacationed.™
