“My vacation challenge is a little different. I have such a good time that I have trouble leaving; I almost quit my job rather than go back! How do I handle my emotional attachment to getting away so it doesn’t overwhelm me next time?”
The Vacation Doctor Answers:
This feeling is not as unique as you think. How many of us have said, “I wish I could just stay here forever” while on a fabulous vacation? Lots of us.
It’s all about balance and expectation. It’s fine to dwell on what a great time you are having, but remember to apply that ‘refreshed, renewed’ feeling toward your future. Remind yourself that the great vacation feeling will make you happier and more productive when you’re back at work, and even could lead to a salary increase or more vacation time. Returning means you will see your friends and family and get to share the fun details of your trip. Best of all, people may remark on how good you look. That’s something to look forward to and a great reason to come home.
